Kevin Jing CHEN

Chair Professor of Electronic and Computer Engineering

Research interest

Prof. Chen’s research lies in wide-bandgap and compound semiconductor technologies for RF/microwave signal amplifications, power converters/supplies with high efficiency and compact size and electronics under extreme-environment operation. He is interested in developing cryo-electronics for quantum computing.

Biography

Prof. Chen received his BS in Electronics from Peking University in 1988. Through the CUSPEA (China-US Physics Examination and Applications) program, he pursued postgraduate studies in Physics and received his PhD from University of Maryland, College Park, in 1993. From 1994 to 1996, he conducted research on ultrahigh-speed functional quantum effect devices and integrated circuits in NTT LSI laboratories at Atsugi in Japan. He was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electronic Engineering in City University of Hong Kong from 1996 to 1998 before joining the wireless semiconductor division of Agilent Technologies at California in USA to develop RF power amplifiers used in dual-band wireless handsets.

Prof. Chen has become a member at HKUST since 2000 and he is currently a Chair Professor in the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering and serving as the Director of Nanosystems Fabrication Facilities (NFF). At HKUST, he established the WIde-bandgap Semiconductor Electronics Laboratory (WISE Lab), focusing on technology development of GaN and SiC power and high-frequency devices and ICs. His work has led to more than 20 granted patents. Besides, Prof. Chen is also a Fellow of IEEE.
